I'm looking for any information on the Warren Family from Burwell. Mainly information or relations of David Warren born 1862 died 1933. Or any of his daughters or any relatives of his Brother Walter Warren married Agnes Bareford. Any other Information would be great as well.

I'll stop by "Clunch" occasionally to look at what's happening in my favorite place outside of St. Louis. I lived in Burwell from 1979 to 1983. I just noticed several items in the guestbook with the name "Rickard" attached to them. That was my mother's maiden name. Who knew? Might have been cousins.

My Mum Shirley Nockels (now Barker) grew up in Burwell she was born in 1947 and left during 1962. Her parents were Herbert Hilliary Nockels and Kathleen Nockels. I am very close to my Mum and love to hear about what life was like back then. I know she would love to be in contact with anyone from her era. I have recently visited Burwell and even though I have never been there with my Mum I feel so "at home" there. Beautiful village with lovely surroundings.

Those who may remember me from my childhood in Burwell, my days at Soham Grammar School, and my not-so-spectacular goalkeeping appearances for Burwell Swifts in the early 1960s might wish know that my memoir of those times and the story of my maternal Smith ancestors will be published on 28 March 2013. The book, 'No More Damned Secrets', also relates how not only my immediate family but also other villagers who were 'in the know' shielded me from knowledge about my paternity; and how uncovering that secret has led to the discovery of Canadian paternal roots.

Greetings from the colonies here in Canada. I was named Edward after my great grandfather Edward Pleasance who I believe was a Tobacco buyer. He moved his family to York around 1850. My mothers mother was his grand daughter Laura May Pleasance who married into the Hoult family. I believe her mothers name was Peachey Pleasance. I have traced the family line to Anthony Pleasance buried 13 oct. 1703 in Burwell, his wife Sarah was buried 20 nov 1696 in Burwell. I would dearly love to obtain any information on my family past and present from across the pond. Regards Edward Thew, Kitchener Ontario.

Does anyone remember any of the following People?
James Leslie Roberts born 1920 in Liverpool & lived at 27 Martin Rd, Burwell. He worked as a machine operator at the box manufacturers and died aged 52 at Newmaket General Hospital. His wife was named Margaret Scott Roberts, who I believe may have been born in 1926 and died in 2005 in or near Bury St Edmunds.

Also James' brother, John Victor Roberts, born 1922 in Liverpool and lived at Goose Hall Farm, Factory Rd, Burwell. He worked as a caravan a**embler and died aged 50 at Newmarket General Hospital in 1973. The informant at his death was Dorothy Patricia Roberts, clearly related but unknown what the relationship was.

A close family member wishes to make contact with anyone related to these brothers, and would be interested in hearing from any living family or anyone who knew any of the above and might be able to provide further information about their lives and/or families.

My name was Cynthia Kingdon when I was evacuated to Burwell with my brother, John, at the beginning of the 1940s. We lived with a very kind couple called Ted and Lily Irons at what was then No. 3 Newmarket Road but which I think is now No. 128. For many years afterwards Mrs Irons and I kept in contact and I visited Burwell too, also with my husband. When he died in 1981, Mrs Irons wrote to me every week with kind, encouraging words to help me through my bereavement. I am now so delighted to have found this Guestbook where I can tell the people of Burwell, especially anybody there who might remember me, e.g. Mr & Mrs Irons’ son, Peter, that I shall never forget the kindness shown to me during those tender years spent among you as a young child.

I was born in Burwell in 1946 in one of the little thatched cottages in the High Street. A Mrs Grainger the village photographer lived in one of these also and she was a great historian who had many photographs of the village and inhabitants. My great grandparents' name was Warren, and they lived in Ness Road [I think]. We came to New Zealand when I was 5. My mum and dad were Bert and Gwen Martin, and he was the son of Tom Martin who married Florence Warren. Everybody's up and died now, except my mother Gwen Martin, who is 89 next week. Great to see so many names I recognise on this page. Maybe one day before I pop my clogs I will see Burwell again!

Thanks to the friendly people of Burwell I grew to love England so much that my two year assignment ended up being nine years. I miss it very much to this day. Thank You to the Millers, the Fullers, the Huggins. The biggest Thank You to the Kytes. I still think of you as "Mum and Dad" and love you both just as much as my own parents. I wonder how you manage without me there to make the mustard.

I was born in Burwell in 1944 and lived in the village to 1963. Since leaving, my thoughts have often turned to two local scenes from that time. They are the barge that was beached alongside the Lode in the vicinity of the old fertiliser works and the threshing machine which for many years stood at the village end of the First (Newnham?) Drove. I would be interested to hear from anyone who knows if there is a photographic record of either or both of those two relics from the village's past.

I was evacuated to Burwell in December 1940. I was placed with two families while I was there. First with Bernard and Olive Peachey in Heath Rd and then with Jack and Ethel Mitchell at the top end of High St. I was looked after very well by both families and I owe them a very big THANK YOU.My wife and I have visited Burwell a few times in recent years and was very pleased to find Hilda Pearce (nee Mitchell). I could not have been evacuated to a better place. Does anyone remember me.

I lived in Burwell from 81-85, and my parents for a few years longer after I returned to the USA. I'm seeking a few friends that I've lost touch with: Daniel Bushell, Neal Coles, Giles Martin are among them. Great to see the site.

Eileen thank you it is good to know that Eric and George are still alive, please give them my regards we were real mates way back when. I did not know your grannie - I had my own, also living on Toyse Lane. We were not regular 'Vacees' my mother brought us to Burwell when we were bombed out in London. Then the Luftwaffe dropped incendaries on us - one dropped into our well and ruined our water supply. But I'll e-mail you. Bob
I'll e-mail you

Is any 'body' still with us who attended the school on Silver Street in 1941 -2? And remembers the troops billeted at Briarwood across the street- I was caned daily by Headmistress Miss Sprake for scrounging lunch with them - and whacked by P.C. Good for scrumping apples. We were Londoners, lived at 3 Toyse Lane and left at the end of the war but I have fond memories of a wartime Burwell boyhood. I had a great collection of incendiary bomb fins collected from the fields after raids and army badges - my proudest a red 'Desert rat' given me by a soldier who still had sand in his kit. My best mates were Eric Ware and George Fuller both lived on Ness Road. Have either of them made it this far?

I'm an American living in Alaska and will be visiting 12 September 2009 with my English cousins, meeting them for the first time in Burwell. We are all descendents of the Stevens family, of the Stevens Mill. My grandmother lived in Burwell until the late 1870's, when she moved to Michigan. Are there other Stevens family members still in the area?

It is a picture of a typical row of Burwell cottages but I cannot place where they are.
Can anyone help me identify them.
You can view it here, along with the rest of my collection.

I am researching my family tree and find that my grandmother's last name was Diver and her family came from Burwell. From what I have found so far is that they moved from Burwell to Rockdale, Milam County, Texas, USA around 1873. I am curious as to why they moved and anything I can find out would be wonderful. Are there any of the Diver family still living there? Does anyone remember any of them? Sounds like Burwell is a wonderful place. Thank you for any information anyone may have.
